Sunset Devils is an isometric weird west action shooter that uses a uniquely complex control scheme for its weapons. In Sunset Devils you are a gunslinger who was lynched on a tall tree in the old west. You should be dead, but it appears that the powers that be have other plans for you. You grab your hat and your knife and set out for vengeance in a land filled with gunslinging bandits. The movement and melee attacks in Sunset Devils are fairly normal, but things get a whole lot more complex when you grab a gun. Each gun in the game has different mechanics based on their real world counterparts. So, for instance, to fire the handgun you need to manually break the gun, eject the old shells, load in each new shell manually, close the gun, cock the trigger, aim and fire. It’s a very promising game with tons of style and tactical combat that makes you really work for each shot. It could do with re-configuring the awkward weapon selection system and scavenging bullets from guns is a real chore, but the reloading mechanics are a lot of fun and mean you have to be sure every time you pull the trigger.

SCHiM is a very creative puzzle platforming adventure where you can only move through the shadows cast by other objects in the world. Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer during the closed Beta sign up, in the world of SCHiM every object has their own soul/spirit that is called a shim. You are one of these shims and you’ve become detached from your thing (a human), so you must now track him down and rejoin with him. The problem is that schim’s live in shadows, so you can’t venture into the light – you need to hop from one shadow to another as you traverse the various environments. The SCHiM demo features a good selection of levels, complete with hidden collectibles to find. It’s a delightful experience, with a great visual style, creative level design and unique gameplay. A superb shadow-hopping 3D platformer with some magnificent game design. Highly recommended.

Toastercide is a very silly physics based climbing game where you help a toaster traverse large urban environments to electrocute people in their bathtubs. We all know that toasters can give fatal electric shocks, but what if they’re actually out to kill you? In Toastercide you are a homicidal toaster who sets out to murder people in their bathtubs. You don’t have any legs, but you do have your power-cord that you can use to grapple and swing around the open world environments towards your victims. Then when you reach them you simply jump in the bath and watch them fry. As you progress you’ll also unlock special toast abilities that allow you to do things like dash or teleport – all perfectly normal things for a toaster to do! It’s a hilariously silly premise and the grappling-based traversal system looks like a lot of fun. Sign up for the Beta to be a very bad toaster!
