Kickback is a biopunk roguelite top-down shooter where you can only move by using the recoil of your weapons. In Kickback you pilot an organic combat vehicle that’s been heavily damaged so can now only move via the recoil of its own weaponry. You can equip different weapons to the left and right mouse button, each with different types of fire and recoil strengths. As you blast enemies they drop XP that allows you to level up your stats and at the end of the round you can select perks and weapon upgrades (and at the end of each game you can purchase unlocks from the shop). It could probably do with making the stat upgrades more interesting, but aside from that it’s a very promising game that makes clever use of its novel control scheme and has a very addictive gameplay loop. A game where weapon recoil can be a very good thing.

Mirthwood is a sandbox RPG life sim game set in an immersive mediaeval fantasy world where you can set out on adventures or just stay home and tend to your homestead. In the enchanting open world of Mirthwood players have plenty of freedom to do what they like. Among other things, you can become a farmer, a trader, an artist or an adventurer. You’ll be able to manage your homestead, harvest crops, look after your animals, craft equipment, socialize with NPCs, trade and build a family. If you’re looking for adventure though, you can explore the surrounding world, visit new towns, complete quests, equip weapons and fight enemies in real-time combat. It’s got a beautiful 2D art style and a rich open world that’s filled with possibilities and really allows you to immerse yourself in it. An enchanting adventure that really does allow you to weave your own story as you build a life in its world.

Megacopter: Blades of the Goddess is a Desert Strike inspired isometric chopper combat game where you pilot an attack chopper that’s inhabited by a bloodthirsty goddess. The chopper-based isometric combat in Megacopter: Blades of the Goddess is very much inspired by classics like Choplifter and the Desert Strike series – you fly around warzones blasting enemies (lizard people) and using your winch to grab useful objects. It’s no Desert Strike clone though, it feels like a significant upgrade in every way. The first thing you’ll notice is that the movement is faster and more responsive, and you have twin-stick aiming that allows you to target specific spots on the ground and aerial targets. Between missions you can purchase upgrades and choose your load-out, and there’s also the small matter of the giant bosses and a goddess that lives in your chopper who unlocks badass powers if you deliver her enough blood. Everybody had good memories of the Desert Strike series, but if you return to them now they’re a little creaky and unwieldy. Megacopter: Blades of the Goddess does a fantastic job of rejuvenating the formula and adding some great little touches of its own.
